What is roughout leather and how will it age?
Roughout leather is full-grain leather turned inside out. That fuzzy surface is the underside of the hide’s grain, the underside of the flesh. (It looks similar to suede, but is much stronger. Suede is the cheap fuzz that's left once the top-grain leather is gone; roughout is the entire full-grain piece of leather.)
The Chisos heritage roughout is durable, tough, and naturally water-repellant. There is a reason wildland firefighters wear roughout; it is more resistant to abrasions, helps prevent deeper cuts than smooth leather, and helps to hide casual scrapes.
Roughout doesn't need to be conditioned like finished leather, and it benefits from the natural oils you pass to it while wearing. Give it a light brushing to remove dirt, and you're good to go!
The patina of roughout is very unique. Its color will adjust over time as it picks up oils and dirt from the environment. The blue dye from denim will leave its mark on roughout, too. Nicks and scuffs also leave their mark. The result is a beautiful patina that only gets better with age and wear.
